These issues will certainly put Pope in the center of the picture and help shape the future in world. Here’s a look at how the conclave works and the leading candidates for the next leader of the Catholic Church

Papal Conclave 2025: A Stepwise Process

Pope John Paul II, in 1996, wrote a document which came to be known as Universi Dominici Gregis. It charted out the procedure of the election of the new pope. Here’s how it unfolds:

1. The Interval: After the pope’s death, the Church goes into mourning. The administration is taken up by camerlengo (cardinal chamberlain) while the Cardinals start the process of conclave.

2. Calling the Cardinals: All cardinals under the age of 80 travel to Vatican. Currently, 120 of cardinals are eligible.

3. The Conclave Begins: Cardinals come in the Sistine Chapel and swear an oath of secrecy. Voting occurs in multiple rounds until a two third majority is reached.

4. White Smoke or Black Smoke: When a pope is elected, white smoke emerges from the Vatican chimney. If no consensus is reached, black smoke appears.

5. We have a Pope: New pope is publicized from St. Peter’s Basilica with the famous Latin phrase: “Habemus Papam!”  translated as we have a pope!

Dynamics shaping the Election

Several factors will influence the conclave’s decision:

Geographical Balance: Cardinals may favor a non-European pope as the Catholicism is growing in Africa and Asia while dropping in west.

Doctrinal Debates: Progressives and conservatives’ debate over issues like inclusion of LGBTQ+ and celibacy of clerics.

Reform vs Tradition: Last pope favored modernization, some cardinals may seek continuity, while others want a return to traditionalism.

Age & Health: Cardinals may opt for a younger, more energetic leader.
